Iranian artist Newsha Tavakolian presents her work “And They Laughed At Me,” in which she explores her archives, not seeking technically perfect photographs, but those that “catch the eye.” This selection does not encompass her best works, but rather technically weaker photographs from her youth, providing insight into her technical maturation and the social context of the time. The discordant moments, from poorly framed to blurry photos, depict the materiality of that era, from cars on the streets to the hijab fashion of the 1990s. Through these photographs, Tavakolian reexamines not only her technical development but also the motives behind her works, creating a layered picture of the inner life of Iran imbued with ideological politics.
